Gig Review
Monday 30th May

Adam & I caught the bus from town. We missed the first 2 or 3 bands but arrived in time for...

The Bitchpups. Pop-rock. This sounded a lot like Weezer to my ears. This is no bad thing, of course. They have tunes, riffs, a charming if slightly geeky stage presence and a cute bass player. A fun start to the day.

Rating: 8/10

Addison Theory. Seattle's that way, boys. Grunge-lite, half the calories and none of the fun. Dull.

Rating: 2/10

Enigma Design. You couldn't tell when the last band stopped and this one started.

Rating: 2/10

White Trash Ambition also have grunge antecedants, but unlike the previous couple of bands actually do something interesting with it. It's a hard-edged sound with filthy guitar noises and a pounding beat. Tasty. My favourite moments are "Leave Them Alone Like teh Scabby Bald Dogs They Are", which is just relentless, and apologizing to the kids for the swearing in "The Wrong Song".

Rating: 9/10

I listened to a couple of songs by The Avenue. They didn't make much impression on me as I can't remember what they sounded like.

Souls do remind of Six by Seven to a certain extent, not so much with their songs as with their guitar sound - it has a spacey feel to it while still being hard enough to rock out effectively. I was drunk enough by this point that I don't have any detailed memories...

Rating: 8/10

The Get-Outs. The most fun you can have that doesn't involve boobies. Dave dedicated "I Sell Myself" to me! As good as ever.

Rating: 9/10

Thanks to Ed for the lift back to civilization (well, St George, anyway).
