Gig Review
Thursday 20th January
A wonderful night celebrating the life of John Peel. Many of the best Bristol musicians playing short sets of cover versions...

SJ Esau - Sam and Max played 'Casper The Friendly Ghost' by Daniel Johnston
I didn't manage to get an unblurry photo of The Get Outs, who played 'Blitzkrieg Bop' by The Ramones and 'Ever Fallen In Love' by The Buzzcocks in their trademark mod-rock style.

Mario Vendredi performed 'John The Revelator' by Son House a capella, which was one of the highlights of the evening. He eschewed the use of the PA and the stage, wondering around the audience clapping, stomping, and using his swooping, dramatic voice to great effect. He then started to sing 'Cumberland Gap' by Lonnie Donegan, but gave up half way through as he hadn't performed the song before!

Id Lab. Hugh played 'I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight' by Richard and Linda Thompson, and then was joined by Rhys from White Trash Ambition to perform 'Chain Shot To Have Some Fun' by Melt Banana. This is another of my hightlights - a storrming rendition of a track from one of my favourite albums, played at a similar speed to the original (242 bpm!).

Those lovely A Lion boys did 'Death of a Disco Dancer' by The Smiths, which I hugely enjoyed. A couple of bass notes Scott struck before they played this alerted me to which song it was - it has one of the most spine-tingley bass lines ever. They followed this with 'Lightning Strikes the Postman' by The Flaming Lips.

Twocsinak. Jo did the whole of the Fall's 'Bend Sinister' album in 3 mins 30 seconds by stripping out all repeated words! The most inventive set of the night.

"I had a cup of coffee and I took some of these, and now I'm totally wired"
White Trash Ambition played one of my favourite Fall songs ('Totally Wired') twice - once at 33rpm, once at 45rpm, in tribute to John Peel's tendancy to play records at the wrong speed! Rhys shouted out "This is for Miles" before playing the song for the second time. My reputation preceeds me once more.

War Against Sleep. Duncan's keyboard packed up before he played. In a spot of quick thinking, the venue's on-stage piano was mic'd up so Duncan could perform 'Children of the Revolution' by T-Rex, and 'An Older Lover Etc.' by The Fall. This had me thinking of the time (back in 1981) when I discovered John Peel's radio show - he played 'An Older Lover Etc' on the first show I listened to and it was the first Fall song that I ever heard.

The wonderful Caroline Martin started with 'Lonesome Traveller' by Lonnie Donegan, then played a downbeat, poignant version of 'Teenage Kicks' by The Undertones. In what was probably my favourite moment of the night, as she went to leave the stage, I begged her to play 'Lovesick Blues' by Hank Williams, which she did much to my delight. She finished with one of her own songs, 'Beautiful Boy'.

Big Joan were wonderful as always, starting with 'Being Boiled' by The Human League. They were then joined by Rasha for a superb version of '50 Foot Queenie' by PJ Harvey, and for the final song of the night they were joined by Duncan for 'Electricity' by Captain Beefheart.
That was a fantastic night - the standard of music was very high throughout, and the atmosphere in Seymours was electric.
