Gig Review
Friday 19th November

[info]technobunny came along to this one - a rare occurance - and we met Ciara at the Croft, which was absolutely heaving.

The Dirty Whitesstarted the night off with their brand of punk/garage with a hint of rhythm and blues. The growly vocalist has a great stage prescence, throwing shapes all over the place during the guitar solos, solid drums and bass, and an organ that adds a little depth to their sound. You can accuse them of being one-dimensional - I think that the set could use a little more variety - and the songs are not exactly deep - "Rock'n'Roll Fucked with my Mind" being the outstanding track and typical of the level they are working on. But, despite all that, they are an enjoyable, rocking and unpretentious band.

Rating: 7/10

The Get-Outs are damn good at this by now. Another band with a punky heritage, but with mod influences - Buzzcocks and early Supergrass would be reference points. Guitar riffs to die for, good songs, and in Dave ('He looks like a Welsh Axl Rose' - [info]technobunny) a great front man. By any rational measure, these guys should be massive.

Rating: 9/10

The New Rhodes are getting worse, possibly due to commercial pressures. Whereas they use to sound alarmingly like the Strokes (but at least did rock out convincingly), they now sound like a cheerful, watered-down mid-period Smiths clone - lightweight, rather jangly, and without the songs to back it up. There are still 3 or 4 songs in the set that I like - all introduced as "This is an old one" (amusing coming from a band yet to release an album!) - which have a lot more spark - "Open Your Eyes" being the pick. But the rest of the set was bland.

Rating: 6/10

Then came a surprise set by Chikinki, testing out some new songs on us tonight. This was an improvement over their slightly lacklustre performance at the October Revolution, despite not being familiar with the songs. There was more life to the set, and, as the songs are new, they haven't been polished, giving them an edge I've found lacking in Chikinki recently. The guitar was more in evidence, with the keyboards taking a more backseat role, which I liked.

Rating: 8/10

DON'T MISSQUOTE ME - I said that something about him made me think of a welsh Axl Rose, though it certainly wasn't his looks ...

It was Ciara who said that he LOOKED Welsh, having just returned from a 3 year Degree course in Swansea :P
